What Actually Happens

What close-up magic actually does for your wedding

Hiring a wedding magician isn’t really about the tricks. It’s about what happens to the room while he’s doing them, and how much better the awkward bits of the day suddenly feel.

The drinks reception stops dragging

Photos take forever and a drinks reception can go flat fast. Close-up magic fills that time without anyone noticing it’s been an hour.

Strangers start talking

Your two families, old school friends, work colleagues who’ve never met. Magic gives them something to talk about immediately.

Every generation joins in

Grandparents and teenagers reacting to the same trick, at the same table, for the same reason. That doesn’t happen often.

The reactions are real

Genuine shouting, genuine disbelief, the odd “how did he just do that.” Not staged, not scripted, not rehearsed with your guests.

The Running Order

Where magic fits into your wedding day

Every wedding runs to its own timeline, but there are a few points in the day where close-up magic earns its keep. Here’s roughly how it tends to land.

Drinks Reception

A natural point to break the ice, entertain guests while photos are happening, and get different groups mixing.

Room Turnaround / After The Meal

A strong point when guests are standing, moving around and waiting for the evening to begin.

The Gap Between Day & Night

That pause between the formal day and the party kicking off. Guests are dressed up, relaxed, and glad of something to do while the band sets up.

Ideal when everyone is relaxed, mingling and free to get involved.

Proof, Not Promises

Watch it happen

Not how it’s done. What it does to a room.

This is what actually happens when close-up magic gets loose at a wedding. Real guests, real reactions, zero rehearsal, and nobody told to act surprised for the camera.

Twenty-Five Years In

Why experience actually matters

Twenty-five years doing this at weddings translates into a few very specific things on your day.

  • Reading a room before he’s even started
  • Knowing exactly who wants to get involved, and never forcing anyone who doesn’t
  • Knowing how long to stay with each group before moving on
  • Working comfortably with every age, from a six-year-old page boy to a great-aunt who’s seen it all
  • Fitting in around your photographer, planner, caterers and venue timings without being asked twice
  • Turning up on time, looking the part, and doing exactly what he said he would
  • Staying flexible when the timings on the day inevitably shift by twenty minutes

None of that shows up in a trick. All of it shows up in how smoothly your day runs.

Al, the magician behind Magic-Al

The Bloke Behind The Magic

Meet Al

I’m Al. Most people call me Magic-Al, and I’ve spent the last 25 years working weddings up and down the country doing close-up magic and mind reading.

At a wedding I’m not there to hijack the day. I’m there to keep the drinks reception moving, get tables who’ve never met talking, and give your guests something to talk about besides the seating plan.

I’ve done this at hundreds of weddings, with every type of crowd, so I know how to read a room, who wants to get stuck in, and when to quietly move on to the next group.

There’s usually a bit of mischief involved somewhere along the way, but the job’s always the same: leave the room in a better mood than I found it.

Quick Questions

Wedding magician FAQs

When’s the best time to have a magician at a wedding?

Most couples book me for the drinks reception, since that’s when guests are mingling and waiting for photographs. Plenty also bring me in for the room turnaround after the meal, or into the evening reception once things loosen up.

Do you perform during the wedding breakfast?

Usually, no. I’ve got nothing against beef Wellington, I just don’t fancy competing with it. The magic works much better when guests have both hands free, rather than holding a fork in one and a glass of wine in the other. Drinks receptions and the evening reception give me proper room to mingle, cause a bit of trouble, and give your guests a much better experience.

How long should we book you for?

Typically one to two hours, usually covering the drinks reception. Some couples extend that to cover the room turnaround or evening reception as well, depending on how the day’s timed.

How many guests can you entertain?

Because I work in small groups and move naturally around the room, this works for an intimate wedding or several hundred guests over the course of a day. It’s about moving through the crowd, not performing to all of them at once.

Will our guests be forced to join in?

No. I read the room and work with whoever’s up for it. Nobody gets dragged into anything they’re not comfortable with.

Do you travel throughout the UK?

Yes. I perform at weddings across the UK, not just around one city, and I also cover destination weddings in Spain.

How far in advance should we book?

As soon as you’ve set a date, ideally. Popular wedding dates, especially summer weekends, get booked up well ahead of time.

How much does a wedding magician cost?

It depends on your date, guest numbers, timings and location, so rather than guess, check availability with your details and I’ll come back to you with an accurate price for your day.
